The 4th arrondissement is known for its narrow streets, cafes and shops. But it is an expensive part of Paris. The island of St. Louis is also in this district and is named after the French king Louis IX. He is the only canonized king of France who lived in the 13th century. It is a peaceful part of Paris with its narrow streets and it has two bus stops and no metro stations. It is mainly a residential area but farmers used to graze their cattle here and sold milk and beef on the markets of Paris.
The medieval area of Marais is also located in the 4th arrondissement. It used to be the aristocratic district of Paris where the nobility lived in large mansions. In the 17th century the nobility moved away and the beautiful mansions became posh hotels like Hotel de Sully, hotel de Beauvais and many more. Marais has a Chinese and a Jewish community, the area around the rue de Rosiers is called the Pletzl or little place in Yiddish. In the surroundings of la Place de la Republique you will find China Town. The Chinese immigrants mainly have jewelry and leather shops. You can find the oldest house in Paris on the rue de Montmorency, built in 1407. You can also visit the Pompidou centre. This large building complex and it houses the national library and the national museum of modern art.
