The Eifel tower is the icon or the international symbol of Paris. The Parisians call it la Dame de Fer or the iron lady. This 324 meters high tower was built in 1889 as an observation tower to warn the Parisians when the enemy approached the city. Later it became a radio broadcasting tower. The famous novelist Guy de Maupassant ate lunch in the tower every day so he could not see the ugly structure on the outside. But you should come and see this tower. Take an elevator up to the highest level and enjoy the panoramic view of Paris.
The subway transport in Paris is convenient and it takes you to all the important places you like to see when you are in Paris. So take the subway and go to the Louvre museum. It is located in the old palace of the French kings. The last king who resided here was King Louis XIV. The museum attracts the most visitors of all the museums in the world. And it is big; it has more than 35.000 objects you can admire from the prehistory and ancient times to the nineteenth century. The masterpiece of this museum is the Mona Lisa, painted by Leonardo da Vinci. Many tourists travel thousands of kilometers just to see her mysterious smile.
Or take the train to the Palace of Versailles which is located about twenty kilometers south of Paris. King Louis XIV was called le Roi du Soleil which means the king of the Sun. He considered himself to be the centre of the universe so he deserved a palace which no other king had. Versailles was built especially for him and he left the old palace Louvre and took his court and many other nobles to this new majestic palace. Versailles became the symbol of royal absolutism which means that the king had absolute power over France and even over Europe. In front of the palace you can see a statue of this glorious king sitting on a horse.
